Tasting & Book Review Etiquette
How We'll Run Our Show

Tasting wine is an art and allows you to experience much more than just sweetness and tartness.  Most people drink wine and make a snap judgment as to whether or not they like it.  When you ask what characteristics they liked or didn't like, most people cannot share this information with you. They just know they like it or not.

Tasting wine in a conscious and planned manner will help you gather the most information out of the wine.  You'll learn about the characteristics about the wine, how it pairs with different food types, and what makes these wines good or bad.  The goal of this and all tastings is to help you better detail why you enjoyed or hated a wine you taste with WCWC or anywhere else, in a non-snobish way.

Tasting the Wines

Three glasses will be placed in front of you, labeled A, B, C (or 1, 2, 3). The wines will be brown bagged and a tasting volume poured into each of your glasses.  Under guidance, you'll be asked to:

  1. Look at the color of the wine and judge its clarity.
  2. Stick your nose into the glass to check the bouquet (smell).
  3. Sip once, sip twice, tell us what you taste.
  4. Pair the wines with various tapas samplings.
  5. Learn a little bit about the wines after they are unveiled.

Discussing the Book

The book under discussion is the central point where we pull our wine and food choices from. The wine and food either come from the book or are related to the location or topic of the book.  While we are tasting the wine and food we will discuss some preselected topics that the book explores to pull more from it.

The book discussion is also not intended to be stuffy or snobby, so let's have fun with it and learn about the book and each other.
